Vintage 1950s Astro Rocket Bank Des Plaines 1st Federal

This is a die cast metal bank in the shape of a rocket ship, made by Astro Manufacturing during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Stamped on one of the rocket fins is the notation ‘R.D. 1957-A Berzac Creation’. It will be for sale on eBay beginning Nov. 8, 2009 at 9:25 PM until Nov. 15, 2009 at 9:25 PM. Search for listings under my eBay userid (my_60s_stuff) to see this item.

These banks seem to have been a promotional item given out by banks during the 1950’s and 1960’s. I recall having this bank when John Glenn completed his orbital flight, so I’ve had it at least since approximately 1962, since John Glenn made his flight in February, 1962. This bank was given out by the First Federal Savings bank at 749 Lee Street in Des Plaines, Illinois, as can be seen by the label on the nose cone.

The spring loaded mechanism on the side of the rocket is used to fire a coin into a slot beneath the lip of the nose cone. It still works!

The gold plating is still shiny and intact, although with a few smudges and scratches here and there.

This bank is unique among the others that you may find for sale in that I still have the key used to unlock the base, allowing you to remove the coins when it is full (or when it is time for another e-Bay purchase!). Please see the pictures for the key and base removed from the rocket.
