1965 Secret Sam Spy Kit Topper Toys Deluxe Reading Corp

This is a ‘Secret Sam’ spy kit from 1965, made by Topper Toys. It came from my own personal collection of childhood toys and I’ve owned it since it was new. It is listed for sale on eBay (Item number 110451255319) until 8:38 PM EST Nov. 7 2009. Search for listings under my eBay userid (my_60s_stuff) to see this item.

The spy kit is only missing the bullets and the message missile. I probably fired these off into someone’s backyard long ago and lost them. The kit is complete, including the instructions, with the exception of the missing bullets and message missile.

Everything seems to work on the set, with the exception of the bolt on the gun. It seems that the spring is broken so it does not actually engage. The trigger engages and makes a ‘clicking’ sound, but the bolt does not move.

The periscope attaches to the gun and you can look throught the periscope, using the lower mirror in place, or can lift the lower mirror up and sight directly through the sight built onto the gun. (Of course, the sight is just a plastic tube.) I had forgotten that this periscope actually works! See the photographs for pictures of the periscope mirrors.

There is a button on the side of the case which allows the gun to be fired while inside the case.

The camera was a fully functional camer, using No. 127 film and taking 16 pictures on a standard roll. I haven’t tried the camera, but I assume it still works. You can take pictures using the camera while it is concealed in the case.

The hinges on the back of the case are still intact and the clasps on the front of the case still work as they should.

The top of the case has some smudges on it – this might just be dirt embedded into the texture of the case. The bottom of the case is clean and black, as shown in the photographs.
